Our patient of the month is our little buddy Ziggy, a 5 year old Miniature Schnauzer. In March of this year, Ziggy was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his right rear leg. Osteosarcoma is a malignant cancer of the bone, usually seen in large breed dogs. It is less commonly seen in small breeds like Ziggy, so we were all surprised by our findings.
After discussing our options, Ziggy’s owners and I decided
to proceed with an amputation and chemotherapy.
Surgery was performed in March and Ziggy recovered quickly.

We began aggressive chemotherapy (his first treatment was on his 5th birthday!) and completed the protocol in May. At his three month checkup this week, Ziggy was doing great. He’s not missed a step and has even gained a few pounds.

Ziggy has been an amazing patient and we're glad he's part of the Stony Brook Animal Hospital family.
